Expectation examines the emotions and/or internal
conflicts that are present during pregnancy. It shows the struggle that occurs
when trying to preserve oneself and at the same time trying to develop a new
sense of self through giving life to another human being that is now a part of
one’s identity. These images journey through the conflicting emotions that are
felt throughout pregnancy, such as feelings of wanting to protect and be
protected, wanting to nurture and be nurtured, along with being fearful of
losing one’s identity and being unsure of one’s self worth. This project is inspired by the individual experience of
being pregnant and the ongoing struggle of trying to find one’s own identity
within the multiple roles that one must portray. These images were produced using paper cut outs and shot with a Mamiya Leaf back Camera with studio lighting.
