Coexistence is a series that explores the idea of multiple selves. Psychological studies state that most individuals have at least two different selves, a private self whom one keeps to them self and a social self that tries to please other people. Other selves that one might possess include spouse, parent, sibling, employee, and/or member of a religious group. This series explores the internal struggle that an individual faces when trying to combine or retract these different selves and the emotions that come along with that interaction. It represents a surreal environment of the mind where these selves interact and try to coexist with one another.
The inspiration for this series comes from the artist’s personal struggle of trying to find herself within the different selves that she portrays; such as spouse, student, daughter, employee and etc. This project is inspired by the ongoing internal effort that occurs when trying to satisfy multiple people, including one’s self, in different parts of everyday life. Psychological studies, such as the writings of Vijai P. Sharma, Ph.D, that deal with the idea of multiple selves also inspire these photographs.
